We walked back through school, somehow managing to avoid any teachers, caretakers or even just another human being.

Frank walked close to my side, only occasionally looking behind him to make sure no one had seen us leave. His hands were fidgeting at his side as though anxious about something.

“I did a few times at my last school. But I promised my dad I wouldn’t do it anymore,” he replied while giving one final glance over his shoulder as we hurried down the front steps.

My hands were becoming clammy as we walked down the corridor. It wasn’t even a hot day, but just having someone else’s hand in mine was making me nervous. I just didn’t do human contact, ever.

I called out to Frank and he looked up from underneath his hood before timidly stopping in front of me. I didn’t know what to say to him.

“Hey,” he said quietly, unsure of why I was talking to him.

“Um, was everything okay last night? I was- Mikey was worried.”

“Oh, that. Yeah, sure,” he shrugged.

“What happened?” I asked, throwing my hands nervously in my own pockets, mirroring Frank.

“Nothing! I just had to go home for dinner, that’s all,” he protested weakly.

I gave him a look that told him I didn’t believe a word of it, “No really, what happened?

Absolution - Chapter 4Chapter Four.

Mikey and Frank were still sat in the living room when I got upstairs. They were watching some cartoon on the TV, I wasn’t paying attention though.

Frank looked over at me from the couch and smiled, probably laughing at my messed up hair. I made my customary frown at him and his smile faded quickly. Content, I walked off into the kitchen and rummaged through one of the drawers for the recipes our mother had left in there for us. I made a point of sitting nowhere near them on the bus. In fact, as far away from that kid as possible was best. We were too alike and I feared we’d be like two repelling magnets and the world would just implode if we were too close for too long.

I scuffed my feet along the ground on the short walk back home. The driveway was empty as expected but I still trudged up the grass as usual and onto our porch. Mikey and Frank were still way down the street so I walked inside on my own and headed straight for the kitchen to relieve my grumbling stomach.

Jason and his gang of dweebs were already eyeing up their new bait.
They were sat over by the football pitch, waiting for the kid to give them some ammunition to attack. They'd given up on me a few years ago when I broke Jason's nose for harassing me. It had got me a week's suspension from school, but it was so worth it.

I stopped eating my sandwich so I could watch the scene unfold in front of me.
Jason was swanning over to where the kid was sat, circling him like raw meat, trying to decide whether they could turn him into one of them.
